Our Summary
- The castle has been derelict since around 1700 (it was described by Symson as ‘wholly ruinous’, in 1684), but enough of its magnificent stone structure, with its 5ft thick walls, remains standing, to provide a sense of the grandeur of the fortifications and original layout
Description
Dunskey Castle, a scheduled monument, stands on the coastal path between Portpatrick and Morroch, its imposing structure and magical setting making it a popular stop for tourists and a sought-after location for film productions. The castle dates back to the mid-16th century and is thought to occupy the site of an earlier castle destroyed in 1500. Despite being derelict since around 1700, the castle's magnificent stone structure remains, with 5ft thick walls, a central tower house, vaulted cellar, watch tower, and long wing. On a clear day, visitors can see Northern Ireland in the distance, adding to the sense of grandeur and mythology surrounding this haunting, historic structure.
