Our Summary

  • Although in this area there are parts that are quite steep, due to the dense canopy there is little ground vegetation, which therefore means it is accessible and also creates the potential to build some woodland steps to ease access into the wood and down to the river
  • The track is just about driveable with a good four wheel drive vehicle right to the far end of Otter Wood, but to render it readily usable it could do with some improvement work
  • There have been some ground works done at Otter Wood to help accessibility to different areas of the wood

Description

Otter Wood is a 14-acre mixed woodland in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, with a tributary of the River Towy on one boundary. The woodland has three distinct areas, including a hazel coppice with mature ash and oak trees, a mature Western Red Cedar area with steep terrain, and a thriving regeneration area with a variety of tree species. The woodland has a right of way access from a minor road and a parking area, as well as a track that leads to a secluded area with a yurt and sheds. The boundaries are marked by a river, stock fence, and stakes, and the lease has over 900 years remaining with a nominal ground rent. The wood is surrounded by the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Fforest Fawr Geopark, with nearby Roman roads and forts. The woodland offers opportunities for quiet and peaceful enjoyment, as well as potential for woodland activities and wildlife observation.
