Description
Rowland Wood is an 8-acre ancient woodland located within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kent and East Sussex. The woodland has been designated as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) by Natural England and is home to a variety of wildlife, including buzzards, lesser spotted woodpeckers, bats, and deer. The wood is predominantly made up of broadleaves, including sweet chestnut, birch, and oak, with some conifers. The management plan suggests that the wood was originally oak woodland with hornbeam coppice, but was converted to mainly sweet chestnut coppice in the late 19th century. The wood is surrounded by other important historical sites, including Bayham Abbey and Scotney Castle, and is located about 2 ½ miles southwest of the village of Lamberhurst. The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows. Activities such as managing a coppice woodland, harvesting chestnut for firewood, and building hides for observing wildlife are possible in the wood. Woodlands.co.uk offers £300 towards a course for new owners to learn the skills required to resume coppicing in the future.
