Puffball Wood is a peaceful Ancient Woodland located on the fringes of Lamberhurst village, offering an excellent opportunity for a hobby forester. The woodland is situated on rich level loam and clay soil and has been historically managed using a traditional silvicultural system called coppice with standards, which provides a steady supply of woodland produce. The woodland is home to a variety of tree species, including sweet chestnut, oak, holly, hazel, and willow, and has a diverse ground layer with bluebells, wood anemone, and primrose. The woodland offers scope for recreational activities such as camping, bushcraft, and fixing a rope swing to a sturdy branch. Wildlife such as deer, wood mouse, badger, and fox have been spotted in the woodland, and a variety of birds, including greenfinch, woodpecker, and long-eared owl, can be heard singing. The forester recommends applying for a Forestry Commission Thinning Licence to begin managing the woodland and potentially creating post-and-rail fencing and a shelter.
