Description
Slade Wood occupies a lower valley situation with a northerly aspect overlooking a trout stream, located near the centre of a larger ancient woodland in a rolling landscape of pasture, woods, and hedgerows. The wood is predominantly oak, with some silver birch and punctuated by older oak stems, while the east side features maturing beech and a rare black poplar. A shrub layer of hazel, holly, and young hardwoods borders the wood, with a ground flora of bluebell, primrose, bilberry, wood anemone, and various ferns.
The area is easily accessible via gentle slopes and good pedestrian paths. A small hut is situated near the wood's upper southern edge, accessed by an all-weather hard track suitable for 2WD vehicles.
